The Five AI Workflows Worth Your Time This Year

Most AI use is either too ambitious or too trivial. People try to automate complex workflows they do not fully understand, or they use it to generate content they could write themselves in ten minutes.

The five workflows below occupy a different space. They are specific enough to implement today, save meaningful time when done consistently, and require no technical knowledge.

Why five and not fifty

There are hundreds of things you can theoretically do with AI tools. Most of them are not worth your time to learn and maintain. A workflow is only valuable if you use it consistently enough to pay off. Five workflows you actually use beats fifty you tried once.

Workflow 1: The meeting brief

Before any meeting, paste the agenda and relevant context into your AI tool and ask: "What are the three most important questions I should raise in this meeting? What background do I need? What outcome should I aim for?" Takes three minutes. Arrives more prepared than most people who spent an hour.

Workflow 2: The first draft accelerator

For any writing task, start with a brain dump. Write everything you know about the topic, unedited. Then paste it in with: "Clean this up into a coherent first draft. Keep my voice. Do not add information that is not here." The draft will be rough but structured. Your editing job is now a fraction of writing from scratch.

Workflow 3: The decision frame

When you have a decision to make, describe the situation and options. Ask: "What are the key trade-offs of each option? What am I probably not considering? What questions should I answer before deciding?" Do not ask the AI to make the decision. Use it to sharpen your own thinking.

Workflow 4: The summariser

Long report, article, or email thread you need to understand but do not have time to read fully. Paste it in. Ask: "Summarise the key points in five bullet points. What action, if any, is required of me?" Review the summary, then read only the sections that need more context.

Workflow 5: The prompt library builder

Every time you write a prompt that produces genuinely useful output, save it. After a month of using AI, you will have a collection of prompts that work for your specific work and voice. That library compounds in value over time in a way that one-off prompts do not.

The one thing to avoid

Do not use AI to generate content you will publish or send without reading it carefully. The confidence of AI output does not correlate with its accuracy. These five workflows use AI as a thinking aid, not a replacement for thinking. That distinction matters.
